Many people wish to attend the local college creating huge waiting lists and
months/year long waits to start. To enrol at the local college, you must be living in
the UK for 6 months and have a valid ID card. Due to Home Office delays many
people are waiting over one year to receive their ID cards, creating a barrier in
attending college. We want to enable our Visitors to continue their learning whilst
they are waiting for an outcome on their asylum claim. We therefore aim to
support personal development through the provision of English, Maths, and IT
classes.
We currently provide 10 English classes per week. These differ depending on
ability, and include Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. There is also 1-to-1
maths tuition, and a computer class to help develop core IT skills. All of our
classes are run by volunteer teachers and we are incredibly grateful for the time
they give to Harbour and our Visitors.
